Please introduce yourself in the comment section below. I've posted a sample introduction to get us started.

  1. Hello, class! Here's my brief intro: I'm a specialist in the areas of southern literature, modern and contemporary American fiction, and theory (specifically psychoanalytical theory), and I've published on Faulkner, the poet Robert Frost, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Vietnamese-American literature. I'm currently working on various projects involving modern and contemporary southern literature, from surveying and assessing newly emergent writers to writing an article on Elizabeth Madox Roberts. I have a special interest in reading literature from non-mainstream voices: the literature of the poor and the disenfranchised, literature by writers of color, and literature written by immigrants and ethnic minorities.

I'm a recent transplant to Fayetteville: before moving here, I lived in a number of different places: Charlottesville, Virginia; Ames, Iowa; Boston, Massachusetts; Tokyo, Japan; Oxford, England; and Vienna, Austria. In addition to reading and scholarship, travel is one of my great passions. I also enjoy being outdoors: hiking, swimming, biking, and camping are my favorite weekend activities.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better this fall! Please feel free to come see me during my office hours--you can come just to say hi!

  2. Hello everyone. My name is Colin McNerny and I am a sophomore student working towards my BM in Music Education, with trumpet as my primary instrument. I started out as an English w/ Creative Writing major, so I still can't quite bring myself to go a semester without a survey class or workshop. I am currently from Southaven, Mississippi which is just south of Memphis, Tennessee, but have also lived in Alaska, Texas, and Alabama.

I have a wide range of interests that span anywhere from parkour to camping to Japanese street fashion. In the field of music I currently play (in addition to trumpet)guitar, keyboards, turntables, and dabble in production software. I also sing vocals on occasion to coincide with my work as a writer/lyricist. As a writer I've never been published, but I have written a few novel length fantasy pieces and more poems than I can even begin to count. In addition to these endeavors, I also spend a great deal of time promoting and seeking opportunities to perform at local concerts, talent showcases, raves, and poetry slams. If you want to know where the arts are happening, I'm usually the right person to ask.

  3. Hi, I'm Lacey McKee and I'm a Junior here at the University. I'm working on getting my BA in Psychology, and minoring in English. They're two of my biggest passions and I just can't seem to get enough of them. I've lived in Arkansas all my life, but moved around pretty frequently throughout most of my childhood.

I'm a very go-with-the-flow type person, and will try just about anything at least once. This, of course, makes my interests very diverse, and I can't ever bring myself to truly hate anything, even if I fail miserably at it. As English and Writing in general have become a major passion of mine, I spend a lot of my time reading and writing bits and pieces of various things. I also love helping people to the best of my abilities, even if it's just sitting there with them. If anyone needs help in a class (of any sort) I'd be more than happy to assist (or find someone who can).

  4. My name's Cyrus Bond, but I usually go by Cy. I'm a sophomore here at the U of A. I'm a transfer student from ASU, where I earned paramedic license, as well as a associate's degree related to that field.

Currently I'm working on my BA of Biology so that I can enter into med school. I'm planning on specializing in neurology. My main interests are medicine, reading, music, and the outdoors. I read quite a lot. Hemingway, McCarthy, and L'Amour are my favorite authors.

I am a Eagle Scout, and have lived in Minnesota, Colorado, and Arkansas. Worked as a guide up in Minnesota, teaching kids how to dog-sled, build quinzies, ice-fish, winter survival type stuff. During the summer I was a canoe guide. In Colorado I was basically just a climber-bum-hippe bartending and waiting tables to get by, and spending most of my time outside.

I took a bad fall while climbing, and had to come back to Arkansas for rehab. After that it was time to figure out what I wanted to do in life, and now I'm here. That pretty much sums me up.

  5. My name's John Cartwright, and I'm a Junior Creative Writing major. I'm interested in cartoons and comics as visual and literary mediums. I'm also interested in games as literary works, because they incorporate reader interaction into their expression. Eventually, I'm going to use my degree to great effect in the video game world, although soon, my girlfriend and I plan to start our own webcomic. I am also working on an 11-part epic novel, which hopefully won't break my mind.

Other than that, I enjoy music and stir-frying. Also, LEGO.

P.S. Don't visit my blog. It's filled with awful poetry that is old and bad.

  6. Hi there! I'm Dale De Jesus, a visiting student from the Philippines. Back at my home university, I am a senior in Broadcast Communication but here in UA, I'm in between a sophomore or junior, majoring in Communication.

I watch a lot of TV series and movies and I aspire to either produce, direct, or write one of those. I've never done a lot of travelling, it's actually my first time to go abroad, but I enjoy travel shows a lot. If given the chance, I would like to learn how to bake and how to play the drums.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I enjoy reading fiction, thrillers, and short stories.

  7. Howdy.

I am from Flippin, Arkansas. I graduated from Flippin High School. Most people think that I am using the word "Flippin" as an adjective when I tell them where I am from, but in this case it is actually the name of my home town.

I am a senior majoring in English and I still have no idea what I want to do with my degree.

And Dale, I am a huge Harry Potter fan too. I can't wait to see the last movie, or go to the new theme park. :)

Dr. Hinrichsen, I am a huge outdoor fan too! I am planning a trip to Devil's den to go spelunking. It will be my first time to visit that particular park.

  8. Hey!

I am an English major with a minor in Spanish and (hopefully) Anthropology. I have always wanted to be a teacher and English is my favorite subject and something I think I could be interested and engaged in as a career. I would love to teach high school English, but would also love to teach in a Spanish speaking country for a few years before I settle down in America.

I have a lot of interests. I am a member of Alpha Phi Omega, which is a service fraternity on campus. I love to volunteer, especially when it involves working with people. I am also a member of the racquetball club team on campus. I love playing in intramurals, even though I am not incredibly good at very many of them. I love to spend time outdoors, whether it be hiking, camping, or just sitting on my deck. Also, of course, I love to read!

I look forward to getting to know all of you better and spending time discussing literature this semester.

  9. Hey there!
My name is Jade Saylors, I am from Gilbert, Arkansas. Since nobody will know where Gilbert is off the top of their heads, it is between Harrison and Marshall, Ar. My town has a total of 33 people (which is why nobody has heard of it) and is located on the Buffalo River.

I'm a sophomore here at the University and I am majoring in English with a minor in Drama. I hope to never have to grow up, but when the time comes that I do I want to be a high school English teacher.

To Dale and Rose: I love Harry Potter and I went to the theme park over the summer..it is amazing and worth the 3 hour wait to get in. Yes, I know I'm crazy.

When I'm not in class or laboring over my homework you can usually find me reading by the pool, watching a play, or kayaking on the river. I love being at the U of A and I'm a bit of a Razorback fanatic. :)

  10. Hi! I'm a transfer student this year and a junior majoring in English/Creative Writing. Previously I was enrolled at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. While there, I worked for the Cherokee Nation in the Registration Department. If you received a blue Citizenship card in the past two years, chances are I'm the one who issued it. :)

I'm originally from Broken Arrow, OK. I've always loved the idea of traveling. Last year was the first time I went out of the country, spending a week in Paris with a Living Literature Class at NSU. It was amazing and I hope to do more as soon as possible!

My ultimate dream career-wise is to be a screenwriter. I love television and comedy. Mindy Kaling (from The Office) is my hero. :)

  11. Hi everyone. I'm Sibraogo Yameogo, but feel free to address me as Robsy if you have problem pronouncing my name. I'm from Burkina Faso which lot of people never heard of, leave alone where it's located in the world map. But we are a French speaking country in West Africa with Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Mali, and Ivory Coast as neighbors.

I'm a Fulbright grantee and I transferred from the University of Ouagadougou back home with English as major. Probably after I complete my Bachelor degree,I will experiment the profession of teacher back home and see how it fits me. I will not also miss any opportunity of being an interpreter in my country, since almost the whole country speaks French.
Apart from English as a second language, I speak my native language (Moore), French, and a poor German.

I never like a book until I start reading it. It's ironical to like reading, and have difficulties starting a book, but this is my case. In my free time, I love to go to the gym, listen to music, enjoy my computer, hang out with my friends, or see a movie. I like comic stuff, so don't make fun of me if I'm still one of the fun of Tom and Jerry.

I think this should be enough for anyone of you to caricature the type of my person on a piece of paper.

  12. How's it going, guys?

My name is Mohammad Suliman. I am a student from Kuwait and I have been living in the States intermittently since 2004. I was majored in Molecular Biology in the University of Colorado at Boulder, which is when and where I discovered my passion in writing and reading and sought to have a career that involves those two aspects. I transferred to Little Rock last year and completed two semesters there while majoring in Journalism and Creative Writing. I had no problems with the faculty at UALR but I sorta disliked Little Rock and found it a bit unexciting (no offense to Little Rock natives). Thus, I came to Fayetteville. I'm still assessing it but, I have to say, the Walton Art Center is a huge plus in my book. I've already booked my tickets for Hitchock's "39 Steps" and "Color Purple".

I am very picky on what I read but recently I have developed an interest in American post-war realism and sought to read the likes of Richard Yates, Truman Capote, John Cheever, Raymond Carver, and Carson McCullers. Internationally, so far, I love reading Orhan Pamuk (Turkish), Haruki Murakami (Japanese), and Per Petterson (Norwegian).

I do hope that, after I get my degree, to continue my studies all the way to Ph.D, but I'm also thinking of working in a literary magazine and/or publish a literary novel. These are bold ambitions for sure but I'm still keeping my expectations modest for now.

In my spare time, I do enjoy watching films, usually classics, dramas, romantic-comedies (the good ones), indies, and all sort of international films (mostly Asian and French). I do enjoy playing video games as well (I own a Wii, PS3, a Nintendo DSi LX, and a PSP). I like RPG games mostly (mostly Japanese RPGs, though I love me some Fallout 3), and adventure games. My favorite video game of all time is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

And finally, whenever my creative sense in tingling, I usually diffuse it by writing critiques and pieces of criticism in my humble blog, Bergsonian Critique. Yeah, I seriously need to write new posts in there.

    Cheers :-)

  13. Good afternoon everyone,

My name is Brett Williams and I am what you might call a "super senior." I currently have a degree in history and as I have already spent large sums of money and time into an English degree I am attempting to complete it also. I am from Bentonville, Arkansas and maintain a job here in marketing.

As you might discover I am an anglophile; I love everything English: poets, writers, culture, history, etc. I love tea, classical music, and obviously enough, reading.
If not enjoying these hobbies or my studies I can be found on the lake skiing, on the soccer pitch, or wandering around aimlessly.

  14. esprit d'escalier-

Today I'm definitely experiencing what the French call the spirit of the staircase: that thing that you should have said, should have done- all when it is too late! So, with the deadline disclaimer being said, and without further ado:

My name is Erin, I'm currently pursuing a degree in Philosophy and Creative Writing. Rather than expand upon the specifics of my academic incarceration, I'll take a more personal route and tell you that the stuff of my existence is compiled of reading, writing, playing guitar, finding new music, adopting new identities, meeting strangers and spending time with my cat Arhur Schopenhauer. I tend to stay lost in abstraction, and yes, I am a shameless dilettante.

This being said, I have an intense interest in people, and find each and every person compelling to some degree. I find the arts are visible traces of invisible things- and a provocation of vitality within myself. We cannot disentangle ourselves from Others, and they are largely responsible for giving us over to ourselves.

"A desire without satisfaction which, precisely, understands the remoteness, the alterity, and the exteriority of the other. For Desire this alterity, non-adequate to the idea, has a meaning. It is understood as the alterity of the Other and of the Most-High. The very dimension of height is opened up by metaphysical Desire."

"Signification is the Infinite, but infinity does not present itself to a transcendental thought, nor even to meaningful activity, but presents itself in the Other; the Other faces me and puts me in question and obliges me by his essence qua infinity."

    -Emmanuel Levinas

"In the horizon of the infinite. -- We have forsaken the land and gone to sea! We have destroyed the bridge behind us! Now, little ship, look out! Beside you is the ocean; it is true, it does not always roar, and at times it lies there like silk and gold and dreams of goodness. But there will be hours when you realize that it is infinite and that there is nothing more awesome that infinity. Oh, the poor bird that has felt free and now strikes against the walls of this cage! Woe, when homesickness for the land overcomes you, as if there has been more freedom there-- and there is no more 'land'!"

    -Friedrich Nietzsche

    Until Tuesday,

    Au revoir!

  15. Hi there. My name is Robin Pratt. I am a transfer student from National Park Community College in Hot Springs where I earned my associate's degree. I am still ONE hour away from being a junior. Creative writing is my chosen major and the decision of what to do when I graduate is yet to be made. Reading is not my favorite, but I love to write. Especially stories. I love to tell stories as well.I enjoy going to the movies, shopping, being outside, exploring, and just about anything. I have three brothers who I look up to, even though they are younger than me. I know the computer basics and this is my first time to use a blog, but i am looking forward to it. So far so good. Coming to the U of A was a huge change, but I love it so far.

  16. Steve Carrillo. I am currently in my junior year and would like to pursue the medical field after my time here at the UofA. I enjoy sports, mountain biking, and reading.

  17. Hello there! My name is Katya, I am an international student from Russia majoring in Non-Profit Management. I live in Nizhny Novgorod (it's not a tongue twister;), the fifth biggest city in Russia. I major in teaching foreign languages in my university back home so I have a keen interest in other languages. I speak Spanish and German so far.

It has been only a couple of weeks that I am in Fayetteville so I feel very excited about that and try to explore Arkansas as much as possible. I attend classes of salsa, swing, capoeira (Brazilian martial art), juggling. I also enjoy hiking, camping and riding my bike.
Besides, I work as a volunteer at Community Access Television and visit local nonprofits as it helps me learn more about issues I'm genuinely interested in, - human rights advocacy, equality, ecology, peace movement.

I try to use any opportunity to learn and understand more about American culture. I travel around a lot, meet locals, go to festivals and interesting events. Taking the course about modern American literature is another attempt to go deeper in my analysis of American culture and search for explanation of many contemporary trends and issues. I find it really hard to stick to the texts all the time as I'm more interested in the social background that inspired the writers and poets to create their works. Anyway, I hope that by the end of this semester I will know more about modernism and learn how to read poetry ;)
